The Risk That Governs All Other Risks

At the IRMSA Risk Report launch, our CEO spoke about how South Africa’s credible rule of law is under sustained pressure and why that matters to every risk professional in the country.

We now rank 57th out of 142 on the World Justice Project’s Rule of Law Index and 82nd out of 180 on the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index. Those rankings shape global perceptions of our governance reliability, our contract enforcement, and our investment climate.

The IRMSA report calls for ethical leadership, institutional resilience, and governance reform  not as aspirational goals but as operational necessities.

For COMRiC, this means recognising that governance risk is not “somebody else’s problem.” Weak rule of law emboldens cybercriminals, fuels infrastructure vandalism, and slows the prosecution of fraud. It directly raises the cost of doing business in our sector.

The lesson is simple: rebuilding the rule of law is a risk mitigation strategy for the communications industry. And it will require the same level of cross-sector collaboration and urgency that we bring to fighting ransomware and fraud.
